After the Jose Fernandez injury, we decided to ask our STATS Research group for data on pitcher injuries and how they compared to the past five seasons. We all feel like injuries are up, but are they really up? And more importantly, are the season-ending injuries to pitchers up?
The answer is that yes injuries are up over the last two years and yes this year there are more season-ending injuries to pitchers than ever before. Here's the numbers:
** How many starting pitchers have gone on the disabled list this season and how does that compare to the past five years?
Starting Pitchers Placed on Disabled List thru May 13
2009 - 42
2010 - 40
2011 - 38
2012 - 43
2013 - 56
2014 - 54
So the number is actually down by 2 compared to last year, but there have been 110 DL trips to pitchers in the last two years compared to only 81 from 2011-12 and 82 from 2009-10. No matter how you look at it, the increase to pitchers is up around 30% from just five years ago.
And we're definitely seeing more season-ending injuries or major injuries to pitchers. Here's the data:
Starting Pitchers Placed on Disabled List thru May 13 and Coded as “Out for Season”
2009 - 5
2010 - 1
2011 - 3
2012 - 3
2013 - 5
2014 - 7
Seven already this season and 12 for the last two years through just May 13th. More to come. That's up from past years as you can see.
The data just confirms what we've been talking about: Injuries the last two years are definitely up and it's the pitchers where most of the injuries are occurring.

And the year is early .... so should we start looking at different rules for DL slots?
We could have something like your TOUT team uses > 4 bench slots with unlimited DL slots
Or something much simpler not changing the 7 reserves but adding two DL slots

Does the seven pitchers out for the season exclude those from spring training?

I believe it's missing something because Chris Liss just listed 11 pitchers out for the year. I think that is the correct number right now from spring training through today.mdecav wrote:Does the seven pitchers out for the season exclude those from spring training?
