Striking Out

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Mon Apr 30, 2018 10:34 am

I don't listen to fantasy radio broadcasts or podcasts much.
I look at it as if I am a sinner and they are preaching the goodness of sabrism.
But, this fella was on XM Radio and said he played in the NFBC, so I listened.
He spoke of how far he was behind in strike outs in his league.
That Bumgarner was on his bench, but even Bumgarner could not save the day because the season will be half over and his strike out totals will be diminished further when that happens.
His solution was to pick up two start pitchers.
He surmised that any pitcher can get three or four strike outs a Start and thus, he would be guaranteeing himself six to eight strike outs.

I'm no expert like he is (since he is on radio and everything) but...WTF?!
He surmised that these pitchers could get blown up in an inning or two, but those are the chances taken.
C'mon.
The way to catch up in strike outs is not to destroy two other categories.
Some of the best teams lag in certain categories.
If it is strike outs, then so be it.
This is like starving in a desert and feeding on your toes.
Then finding out that toes were pretty useful for walking.

Our game is all about numbers to be sure.
Yes, FAAB'ed two start pitchers can swell strike outs....and ERA...and WHIP.
By kinda solving one problem, two others are created.
And this is an expert, no less.
A hard throwing reliever, not coveted by most NFBC drafters for lack of Saves, could get as many K's in a week.
AND NOT DESTROY PERIPHERALS.
Our game offers us many trails to navigate.
Using the right trails is key to winning our game.
It kills me when an 'expert' can only find a faus trail and expound on that trail as if the only one to win his league.
Ugh.

Clutching at straws is something that experts should be warning against.
It is certainly not a strategy.
Yet, there it is.
Wow.
In the NFBC, we want quality numbers.
Quality numbers are not obtained week in and week out by two start pitchers from FAAB.
The WHO in two start pitchers, is much more important than the WHY you are selecting them.
At least that's the way I see it.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
