The Main Event

One of the questions I get asked most is this...
"Is the Main Event really that much tougher than other drafts?"
The answer is yes.

Let's look at the players.
For most players entering the Main Event, it is about prestige, it is about money, it is the signature event that ALL fantasy players look at.
Thinking about it right now, I know that a guy named Fessler won it last year. A guy named Silver the year before.
We remember Main Event winners.
I couldn't tell you who won any 'expert' draft. I couldn't tell you who won any 'Diamond' or 'Ultimate' leagues.
Even though there is self-prestige for the winner of any expert leagues, we generally don't care.
After all, aren't they all self or publisher-proclaimed experts?
The Diamond and Ultimate have a lot more money in those leagues, but they have the money to spend.
It doesn't make them better fantasy players.
The players in the Main Event are all on a mission. They want to win their league. And they want to win the Overall.

Many times, Draft Championship players will tell me that Draft Champions is just as difficult.
No way.
The Main Event is an obsession.
It is treated as we treat our first born.
We draft, nurture, coddle, and scold players all year.
FAAB in the Main Event, instantly, makes it much more difficult than any Draft Championship.
Some of us have many, many Draft Champions leagues.
Most players, only one or two Main Events.
Granted, the Main Event was much more of a solid event when we were limited to one team.
It was a do or die team.
It is a 'Is what it is team.'
A little of the quality left when the NFBC allowed more than one team and different draft times,
Still, it retains its place as THE league to win in fantasy baseball.

Draft Champions, Cutlines, and other smaller events in the NFBC are compilation leagues.
We want each team to succeed, but soon, some teams are paid attention to a lot more than others.
It is natural.
Once out of the money in smaller leagues, the better teams get the love.
Almost all Main Event teams are managed well into the season.
And for good reason. Things can change in an instant.
Last year in May, I was hovering around the 400's of 480 teams.
15th out of 15 in my league.
A league I won.
FAAB can cure a lot of ill's.
Players slumping early in the season can break out in later months.
Rookies are called up.
It makes the Main Event a new event each day in looking at our box scores.

For those that have never joined a Main Event and feel you're ready, join up.
Every other team will become secondary.
You'll know every player, how they're doing, and where and if they're playing that night.
A delightful obsession.
If not ready, get into a satelite league for a little more money than you're comfortable with.
Draft and follow that team all year.
It may give you a semblance of how we feel.
A semblance.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
