Reverse Roto League

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Sun Mar 26, 2017 8:00 pm

A few years ago I played in a reverse roto league.
Ok, it was longer than a 'few' years ago.
Damn, I'm old. Anyway...

BB's replaced K's for Pitchers (You may think this repetitious in keeping WHIP too, but it works. Especially for young Randy Johnson types)
L's replaced W's
A relief appearance in which a run was given up replaced Saves
High ERA and WHIP replaced the lower versions.

Offensively, each category remained the same.
Only we went for opposites of what we're looking at here. Low replacing high.
To keep players honest, we had an at bat minimum.
It was a great deal of fun and I hope that with the promise of better IT from SportsHub, that it can at least be a thought as an added contest.

The league made us look at players in different ways.
And damn, it was just a lot of fun rooting for failure of our players after many years of hoping for the best from them.
2006 was one of the year's we competed.
I remember Mark Loretta being a star in that league.
635 at bats and less than 10 total homers and stolen bases. (5/4)
A gem!
Sure, his .285 batting average and 75 Runs were a bit of a drain, but three and a half categories of fantasy badness was badass.

I bring this up because of RotoBro's man love for Martin Prado.
Prado would be a star in that league.
600 empty at bats is what we were looking for. Prado's batting average and his 70 rbi would be a little of a drain, but like Loretta, he would be a star in that league with just eight homers and two stolen bases.
One thing that league taught me is that one category batting average players are maddening for our roto play.
Checking the box score everyday and seeing 4-0-2-0 or 5-0-2-1 is maddening.
It feels the same as trying to use a spinning cycle as a means of transportation.

Drafting Martin Prado is a sign of giving up.
Third base is a power position, if using Prado as a 3B or CI, you are giving up categories to other players.
In Prado's first 200 at bats last year, he had neither a homer or stolen base.
I could not handle that.
At the same time, Francisco Cervelli, another 'valued' player of RotoBro had one homer.
Ugh.
He sees 'value'.
I see it too.
Only it would be in my reverse-roto league.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

LOL good stuff

Steve "Nobody" Jeltz would have been a fine candidate for this league.
