A Rule in Fantasy as in Life: Stay Away From STD's

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Fri May 18, 2012 11:56 am

Ok, six full weeks of the season.
A small sampling size for some. An eternity for others.
Let's look at the over achievers and under achievers.
We just won't take the cream of the crop at a position. We'll focus on the best and worst players relative to their adp and draft pick rounds.

Catchers-

STD's (Stupid, terrible draftees)
Suzuki .227/5/0/12/1
Hundley .167/7/2/13/0
Mauer .265/15/1/16/2

Lotto Winners-
Ruiz .363/19/7/27/1
Ellis .330/12/3/17/0
Pierzynski .299/15/5/26/0

Mauer may be a surprise. But for a guy in the middle of a lineup and taken early in drafts, he has returned empty numbers. Hundley and Suzuki owners not only have their past numbers to look at, but a future of hitting in two of the worst hitting parks in baseball.

Are Ruiz, Ellis, and Pierzynski for real?
Probably not.
But what a great ride so far....

First Basemen-

STD's
Hosmer .174/16/5/18/1
Pujols .214/12/3/18/0
AdGonzalez .273/20/2/20/0

Lotto
LaHair .330/18/10/21/1
LaRoche .336/14/7/30/1
Trumbo .370/15/6/16/2
Freeman .271/27/7/30/0

The STD's are all top choices. You may be surprised that a .273 hitter could be on the list. Gonzalez is averaging three rbi and runs a week. His owners were expecting one GAME like that every week.

Trumbo is a great natural hitter. The Angels could screw him up or hurt him by playing him defensively. He's a menace and lost in the field. He's a menace to pitchers at the plate.
Kendrys Morales is a nice hitter, but there are no guarantees he'll ever be the same. The Angels are hurting themselves with too many outfielders and dh's. Cut some ties!
Freeman may vy with Votto for best 1b in fantasy this year.
Ooooh La La for LaHair and LaRoche....

Second Base

STD's
Ricky Weeks .156/14/4/7/2
Ryan Raburn .154/7/1/6/1
Neil Walker .260/8/1/13/1

Lotto
Jason Kipnis .268/26/6/23/6
Omar Infante .325/20/6/19/4
Jose Altuve .318/21/2/13/8

Weeks is incredibly weaks. Lost or injured, he doesn't look good either way. Raburn sure is great....if it were still spring training! He is the King of Florida! But, plays in Detroit.
Walker has a case of Maueritis, hitting in the middle of the lineup and hitting a lot of harmless singles.

Kipnis is a cat filler. And I mean that in the best way. He can be the cat filler while Weeks is the cat litter.
Infante probably has hit more than half his home runs for the year in one month. Still, if he keeps producing in other ways, he is very useful.
Altuve was a darling of a lot of drafters and has fulfilled expectations.

Third Base

STD's
Ryan Roberts .233/8/2/15/3
Mark Reynolds .191/9/2/9/1
Danny Valencia .190/9/1/11/0

Lotto
David Freese .280/16/8/29/0
Chris Johnson .287/15/4/20/2
Kyle Seager .269/14/4/21/3

Roberts can spread his joy for owners over two positions. He is losing at bats. A blessing for some owners. I don't like to use injured players for this exercise, but Reynolds gets an exemption for how poorly he performed before mercifully, making his owners remove him from their lineups.
Valencia was a sleeper for some. He'll be doing his sleeping at AAA.

Freese owners are ecstatic that Freese (as of 11 am, mst) is still healthy. Johnson wasn't even going to start for Houston, Paredes was. Johnson has better numbers than almost every third baseman. Of course, almost every third baseman has been hurt.
Seager....See Johnson

Shortstop

STD's
Erick Aybar .189/8/0/7/2
Jhonny Peralta .252/10/1/11/1
Clint Barmes .162/4/2/6/0

Lotto
JJ Hardy .261/25/9/20/0
Rafael Furcal .367/28/2/17/7
Derek Jeter .363/25/5/15/2

Aybar signed a long term deal and forgot how to hit. He has security. We want to call security. We were robbed!
Peralta joins the list of Mauerites. Playing everyday, but part timers are surpassing him in all categories.
Clint Barmes is only here because of how extraordinary he has been at being bad. And he still plays!
Full time!
Oh, those wacky, losing Pirates!

JJ Hardy has an outfielders power numbers.
Furcal and Jeter have found Ponce DeLeon. No, DeLeon is not a reliever for the Royals.

Outfielders

STD's
Colby Rasmus .203/13/3/14/1
Jeff Francoeur .241/16/1/8/0
Alex Presley .220/11/2/7/3
Peter Bourjos .203/5/1/9/1
Ryan Ludwick .183/6/3/12/0

Lotto
Adam Jones .296/31/13/26/6
Josh Hamilton .399/32/18/45/2
Austin Jackson .331/29/5/17/6
Carlos Beltran .293/28/13/32/5
Josh Willingham .294/22/7/22/1
Josh Reddick .283/27/10/22/4

Rasmus has yet to blame his bad start on his Dad. Or the Cardinals. Or LaRussa. Or McGwire. Or the Blue Jays. Or God. Or Rajai Davis. Or his Aunt Ruth.
He hasn't blamed anybody. Not even himself.
Which could only mean that these are the stats we are to expect from Rasmus.
Francoeur=Mauerite
If Presley were to start well in Pittsburgh, they'd be calling him 'The King'.... They call him other things now.
Bourjos is another loser in the Angels lineup lotto. Proving that a team really can have too much talent....and lose. It's a shame to see one of the best defensive outfielders in the world watching Vernon Wells play baseball every night.
Ryan Ludwick needs to find somebody that he can hit. Maybe Ponce DeLeon, the reliever.

Adam Jones was going to breakout one year. Congrats, this is the year!
Hamilton is the highest pick on this list. His stats leave even Matt Kemp in the dust.
Austin Jackson has undergone a Granderson type turnaround. His swing looks shorter, more powerful.
You were right, Em! I was wrong! Alright, Are you happy, dammit!? :D
Carlos Beltran owners are holding their collective knees.
Josh's Willingham and Reddick are trying to put the good back in the name Josh, that Beckett is trying to take away. These guys are filling stat sheets with nobody around them in the lineup and horrible hitting parks.

That's it!
I know you've got somethat you think I may have missed and you're probably right.
Remember, I tried staying away from injuries and made the STD's, adp relevant.
Feel free to hit me with your's.

A joy, as always, reading your writing, Dan.

Great stuff as always Doughy. By the way, I'm pretty sure I've caught a few of the "STD's" you mention above. Hopefully they have a pill or shot for them like they do for the other kind.

Thanks Em and Glenn, much appreciated.
We all strive to avoid the STD's. And now is the time of year where we find that they are a bitch to get rid of.
Take Adam Lind, no really, take him!
That's what some of his former owners are saying while others hold onto him, hoping he comes back someday, a different hitter....or at the least, a hitter.
We need a Public Service announcement during the off-season reminding us to avoid STD's.
