I would like to here what others thought of my first ten picks. I was not pleased in retrospect with Sizemore so early (decent numbers last year across the board, but not world beaters by any stretch and it is too early in his career to know if he is consistent enough to warrent an early round selection) and Harden (just like last year the first SP I picked came with some injury baggage). Overall, I was not happy that I took two outfielders and three pitchers in the first ten.

I like the power potential (HR/RBI/R) of three very early picks (Manny, Aramis, and Delgado). Nice core of proven producers.

One observation...didn't feel like there were any real big "runs"...some mini-runs like catcher, but no real rushes. Maybe all the time in between picks kept people from over reacting.

Spyhunter, as an overall observation, you seemed to lean towards high risk (players coming off injury, injury risks or career years)/high reward. Not a slam at the strategy by any means because when it works, you look like a genius. Was that the way you wanted to go or did you just feel the direction of the draft kind of led you that way?

Guys, thanks for participating in this and exchanging comments etc. This has to be the end for me, as I am headed on vacation next week.

(Obviously if some of you wished to continue and found substitutes - there are others who have told me they can no longer continue - you could keep going, but I think it has lost it's value)

One thing we could do now is analyze our drafts or ask questions of others or make general comments as some have done in posts above this. I will do mine in a few minutes.

See you all later - live in Vegas or back on the boards here.

I would welcome any comments on my first 10 rounds. Even criticism would be welcomed. I would be happy to give my evaluation of your team also if you wish. It was fun. Maybe we can do this again next year. Good luck to all in your real drafts. Unless of course your in my league.

Mock Draft

Post by Captain Hook » Fri Feb 03, 2006 9:44 am

My draft proceeded as follows:

1-12 Derrek Lee, 1B, CHC

2-4 David Wright, 3B, NYM

3-12 Joe Mauer, C, MIN

4-4 Marcus Giles, 2B, ATL

5-12 Chipper Jones, 3B, ATL

6-4 Dontrelle Willis, P, FLA

7-12 Derrick Turnbow, P, MLW

8-4 Orlando Cabrera, SS, LAA

9-12 Michael Barrett, C, CHC

10-4 Tom Gordon, P, PHL

Here are my thoughts as the draft progressed (or what I can remember).

Round 1 - amazing to have D. Lee fall to 12 probably because in my opinion, both Soriano (in DC park) and Tejada were taken too early

Round 2 - delighted (and surprised) to get Wright here - he has been going in first round in real drafts

Round 3 - would have liked VMart here. I took Mauer because I was on the turn, only six picks to my fourth and Mauer might go there, but alternates would not (not all of them anyway)

Round 4 - took Marcus Giles - was between he and Kent, who might slide although unlikely. Didn't think with good shot at 20-20 at 2B that Giles should have slipped that far.

Round 5 - well Kent slipped to fifth, but off the boards before back to me as was Cantu, Glaus, Lugo and a few SP that I would have taken, so took the best "sure" 3B left with Chipper (I have some injury doubts/concerns about Rolen)

Round 6 - took DTrain - best SP available

Round 7 - took Turnbow - best closer left and Brewers an improved team this year

Round 8 - missed the premium SS run early, so needed to get best left here - OCab

Round 9 - decided to take my second catcher - Barrett and Mauer a very strong combo at a weak position. Yes, I am a position scarcity drafter

Round 10 - Flash was best closer available for my second one.

In a different form my team through Ten rounds:

C - Joe Mauer, Michael Barrett

CI - Derrek Lee, David Wright, Chipper Jones

MI - Marcus Giles, Orlando Cabrera

SP - Dontrelle Willis

RP - Derrick Turnbow, Tom Gordon

I would ransom one of the Queen's Jewels for that start in Las Vegas.

Draft observations in general:

Peavy and Carpenter went too early as did Soriano and Tejada

Abreu went too early (but has potential to be right)

Clemens went way too early for someone who may not play at all or at best misses first six weeks

Round-by-round Best and Worst Picks:

BEST

1. Derrek Lee - Capt Hook

2. Todd Helton - Golden Eagle

3. Lance Berkman - Spyhunter

4. Marcus Giles - Capt Hook

5. Felix Hernandez - Golden Eagle

6. Dontrelle Willis - Capt Hook

7. Eric Gagne - Edwards King

8. Brad Wilkerson - Kimo

9. Cliff Floyd - AGD

10 Magglio Ordonez - Golden Eagle

WORST

1. Jake Peavy - Maui Dude

2. Jason Bay - Snord

3. Barry Bonds - AGD

4. Roger Clemens - Mathis

5. Jhonny Peralta - Vander

6. Chad Tracy - Chest Rckwl

7. Rocco Baldelli - Scorpion

8. Jeff Francouer - Spyhunter

9. Omar Vizquel - Mathis

10 Bob Wickman - bjoak

Capt Hook and Golden Eagle tie for most dangerous-looking teams with 3 top picks each; Mathis is my favored for the cellar as the only team with two worst picks.

I'll take any and all wagers for my 10 best choices against my 10 worst choices. Any takers?

Not sure what that wager would be Kevin, but on the worst 10, I will be you are wrong about two of them: Bay and Peralta are both good picks.

Bay has been going late in the first round in several drafts (whether he should or not is a different question)

Bay has been going late in the first round in several drafts (whether he should or not is a different question) The best/worst lists are just my opinion. Bay in particular, I believe should go much lower than that. As for a wager, most roto dollars generated according to rototimes, or whoever, at year-end could decide the winning group of 10 players (each list has 7 hitters and 3 pitchers).

Not that I think Bay isn't worth it.

I always try to find the highest upside player in an NFBC type of draft. Why? because I think that to separate yourself from so many other good players you should do that. Having said that, I followed Doughboy's team last year and he did very well simply by not getting hurt and having all his players pretty much do exactly what was expected... And I finished miserablly (in the NFBC 100k) - so propably my strategy is too high a risk - players like Sosa and Woods killed me last year :(

It seemed that the second run on closers was well under way and I needed one. I didn't go through the work to really figure out who hadn't been taken yet. Still haven't.

Wickman's peripherals make me nervous, as does his health, due to weight more than history. I had a conversation with my father a couple months ago where neither of us could remember his name for some reason and we just kept referring to him as That Fat Guy From Cleveland, e.g.:

"I still needed a closer so I called and asked you who I should take. And you said That Fat Guy From Cleveland."

"Yeah, but That Fat Guy From Cleveland wasn't really the best guy available."

"You kiddin' me? That Fat Gut From Cleveland was fantastic for me. He was getting me two saves a week."
