CreativeSports.com 15-Team Mock Draft Tonight

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Wed Nov 12, 2008 8:26 am

I will be part of tonight's CreativeSports.com mock draft for their pre-season magazine tonight along with some other familiar faces in the NFBC. I think I have pick 11. I'll provide some of the early results tomorrow for all to see. Stay tuned.

Greg/Todd - where is the draft being held and is there a way we can see the early rounds in (near) real time?

23 rounds, 15 teams, 2 hours and 5 minutes. And that was without any updated listings in the que for 2008. Man, what a speed draft.

Todd was in it too. He can post the first few rounds if he'd like or I'll do it tomorrow morning. Great fun and a lot of knowledgeable owners. I think Holliday went mid first and Matt Wieters went 14.2. I was going to take him 14th or 15th round. Bummer. I think I got Ramon Hernandez like in the 18th round instead. :D

Good stuff and I'll post tomorrow.

More...must feed excel...must crunch numbers....

No smashing outliers so far but a couple of folks showing some man-love for the likes of Hamels, Figgins, and Soto (third consecutive draft that Soto has been picked earlier than the preceding draft).

Looks like from this patch Jay Bruce has joined Soto as preseason hot picks. Two outliers here:

Khalil Green in the top 10 rounds? Even Baltimore is not sure they want him.

Jorge Posada in the 7th round?

Yeah Wayne, I started out with Sizemore, Beltran and Granderson, three outfielders and three 5-tool guys. I think I could have had Kemp in the fourth, but opted for Alexei Ramirez instead. I don't have any big boppers or big SB guys, but the total could be better than the individual parts.

This draft we had to fill our 23-man rosters as we only went 23 rounds, so it was slightly different than an NFBC draft. But it was fun and it was good to see so many industry guys embrace the 15-team mixed league concept. Kudos to Lawr Michaels for running the results of this format in his pre-season publication. Buy the magazine in early January for complete results.

Here's my team, for what it's worth:

C- AJ Pierzynski

C- Ramon Hernandez

1B - Conor Jackson

2B - Alexei Ramirez

SS - Troy Tulowitzki

3B - Alex Gordon

CI - Mark Reynolds

MI - Felipe Lopez

UT - Jose Guillen

OF - Grady Sizemore

OF - Carlos Beltran

OF - Curtis Granderson

OF - Johnny Damon

OF - Freddie Lewis

P - Cliff Lee

P - Yovani Gallardo

P - Ted Lilly

P - Jered Weaver

P - Mark Buerhle

P - Tim Hudson

P - Joe Nathan

P - Huston Street

P - George Sherrill

I tried to draft a solid BA, solid ERA and WHIP and not reach for too many young guys. I needed power late in the draft and grabbed Reynolds, hoping for more of the .260 average than the .239 version of last year. I could have taken Glaus instead of Gordon, but figured in November I'd go with the more upside. I went with only six starters, knowing if this were a 30-round draft I could add more starters later. Guys like Mike Mussina were still out there at the end.

Have fun with the results and we'll have our magazine drafts in early December.

One player who dropped more than I expected in this draft was Derek Jeter, who was the 10th shortstop selected as he went 95th overall. I certainly understand why he could go after Stephen Drew, Troy Tulowitzki, Michael Young, Jhonny Peralta and Miguel Tejada, but it was surprising. I guess only 11 homers, 11 stolen bases and 88 runs will do that to ya.

is anybody surprised to see albert once again at the top? jason bay in the second round is the biggest early round surprise to me. i was a huge bay fan, but it seemed like he lost a lot when all the steroid issues emerged. maybe he just need a change of venue and maybe beantown will revitalize his career. i'm also surprised to see 8 SP's taken before peavy. especially doc, and the injury prone duo of beckett and kazmir. maybe his injury this year scares everyone, but i have a feeling a new team and we'll see the cy young peavy we all know that was drafted in the early rounds last year.

With speed being tough to find this year, I would be surprised to see Albert atop many NFBC drafts this year. You never know, but the SBs will be hard enough to find later on without passing on them early in the first round. Just my thoughts.

Pujols was the top NFBC earner this past season. If you are confident his elbow woes will not hinder his production, he is a legit top pick. His only downside is a lack of steals, so if his batting average tails a bit, the guys that get some bags (Wright, ARod) could have similar power numbers but more value from the SB.

Obviously, much of Reyes' and Ramirez' value comes from steals.

As of now, Hanley would be my #1 pick.

With speed being tough to find this year, With that said, Juan Pierre went #284.

Something to keep in mind, Greg may or may not agree, is that while the crew assembled to do the draft is a legit group of guys that know what they are doing, they don't have nearly as much experience in the 15-team mixed format as those of you so starved for stuff you are reading these words right now.

And if I have learned anything in my 5-years of NFBC play, it is that the 15-team mixed draft is an entirely different animal than either a deep "only" league (obviously) but also from a 12-team mixed as well.

It is going to be interesting to compare the results from the new on-line 12-teamers this spring.

As of now, Hanley would be my #1 pick. all of the speculation before our drafts about albert's elbow dropped him to lower 1st round in most drafts. i think everybody thought the cards would suck, and they'ed shut albert down late in the year. as it turned out, he was the typical albert and became a bargain 1st round pick.

Although Hanley and ARod will probably dominate the top pick come March, I would not be surprised to see a few Pujols, Reyes, Wright, and even Sizemore as a #1 pick. It doesen't seem as clear cut as it has in past years.

Also, with Santana not dominating the NL as some hoped last year, and a lot of drafters not liking the size of either Lincecum and Sabathia, pitchers should be very scarce in the first round.

Peavy should drop in this draft. He's leaving the best pitchers park in baseball, arguably the worst division in baseball, and where he lands is still unknown. If the Holliday trade taught us anything, it's that Peavy could go anywhere.

Peavy, on a good day, reminds me of Nolan Ryan. He grunts very loudly after release and can make hitters look futile. Speaking of Ryan, my favorite line about him came from Reggie Jackson. He said, "Every hitter likes fastballs just like everybody likes ice cream. But you don't like it when someone's stuffing that ice cream down your throat by the gallon. Thats how it feels when Nolan Ryan is throwing fastballs by you."
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
