Johan Santana - First Round Blunder?

I am curious to see the rosters of the other teams that drafted Johan Santana in the first round. The big question with drafting Santana -- unquestionably the best pitcher in the draft -- is whether you can properly fill out the other areas of your team. Here's how my team looked after taking Santana at pick #5:

SP Johan Santana 1.05

SP Jeremy Bonderman 6.11

SP Freddy Garcia 15.05

SP Kevin Millwood 19.05

SP Boof Bonser 21.05

SP Kei Igawa 22.11

SP Jeremy Sowers 23.05

SP Cliff Lee 28.11

RP Jose Valverde 9.05

RP Salomon Torres 12.11

RP Todd Coffey 25.05

RP Kerry Wood 26.11

RP Mike MacDougal 29.05

RP Jon Lester 30.11

C Jason Varitek 16.11

C David Ross 18.11

1B Derrek Lee 2.11

1B Prince Fielder 4.11

2B Josh Barfield 8.11

2B Kelly Johnson 20.11

3B Edwin Encarnacion 11.05

SS Rafael Furcal 3.05

SS Yuniesky Betancourt 24.11

OF Adam Dunn 5.05

OF Nick Swisher 7.05

OF Chris Young 10.11

OF Raul Ibanez 13.05

OF Carlos Quentin 14.11

OF Shane Victorino 17.05

OF Shawn Green 27.05

Now the big question: did I get enough offense to justify taking Johan Santana with my first pick?

See my post on the "first to post" topic. I took Santana also.

Nice team. You still managed alot of power. I also like Sowers in round 23.

Glen, love some of your upside guys on offense. I think that BA and steals could be a problem. I think that Garcia, Millwood and Igawa could take away a little from Santana's dominance, but if Igawa come through, pitching could be very, very solid.

I'm a total newbie Glenn, but I think you did well, and I think your steals will be just fine. Your BA will suffer with Dunn and Swisher, but your paying them to trot around the bases.

I love Bonderman, but if Santana SOMEHOW struggled this year, the pithcing staff could be shaky.

Nice overall job!

I thought I got a steal with Raul Ibanez at the end of the 10th, then I see you got him in the 13th great value pick there...

Now the big question: did I get enough offense to justify taking Johan Santana with my first pick? Santana went 2.06 in LV 8... go figure? Howard fell to them in the 1st.

Howard 1.10 and Santana 2.06? That's even better than Pujols at 3!

Swisher seems to be a reach in the 5th round, not that he's a bad player but why that early. Ok team in general though.

Does anyone know how long it takes for them to upload the rosters into the system?

Hey there KoQ. Nice to meet you. It was great sitting near you, except the 4 times you took the guy coming that we wanted I couldn't believe it. I am sorry I didn't get a chance to say hello to Quahog at the draft.

Anyway, RT and I were the lucky ones who got Pujolis at #3. Here is the main team from that draft. The obvious whole is the lack of a 2nd closer :( but pitching went fast and furious in our league, and we weren't willing to pay the price on offense to secure a mediocre 2nd starter. FAAB or bust for us on that.

P Ryan, B.J.

P Wang, Chien-Ming

P Capuano, Chris

P Papelbon, Jon

P Beckett, Josh

P Bush, David

P Prior, Mark

P Davis, Doug

P Gonzalez, Mike

P Duke, Zach

C Navarro, Dioner

C Schneider, Brian

1B Pujols, Albert

2B Phillips, Brandon

3B Glaus, Troy

SS Eckstein, David

1B/3B Crede, Joe

2B/SS Cantu, Jorge

OF Wells, Vernon

OF Abreu, Bob

OF Matsui, Hideki

OF Rowand, Aaron

OF Podsednik, Scott

UTIL Gomes, Jonny

Some of the bench: Guillen, Jose / Wily Mo Pena / Jeff Baker

Our mistakes were pretty clear after the draft: Phillips in the 6th was a bit of a reach. Gordon Gekko managed to get him in the 11th!!! As previously mentioned, lack of a 2nd closer.

Anyway, a good time, and good job to everyone

Regards,

Spyhunter
