Interesting strategy by the Phillies. They pitched around Bryce Harper all night, walking him 3 times, twice intentionally. He comes up with a runner on 1st with 2 outs in the 9th inning, losing 4-3. Stephen Drew on deck to pinch hit for the pitcher. I would definitely have walked him again. He did end up grounding out... but still. He's is the best hitter in baseball.

Kershaw gives up 5 runs in an inning. When is the last time that happened?

Sat Cespedes for the first half of the week...sigh....

McCutchen has three homers in a game.
The Atlanta Braves have three homers this season.
Zero homers over their last 15 games.
Two of their three homers were hit on Opening Day.
The Diamondbacks gave a crapload of money and prospects to get two new pitchers....
Shelby Miller has given up 19 earned runs.
Last year, Shelby Miller had given up his 19th earned run on June 13
Zack Greinke has given up 21 earned runs.
Last year, Zack Greinke had given up his 21st earned run on July26
Greinke has given up seven runs twice this year.
Last year, the most runs he allowed in any one month was nine.
Greinke had three months of under seven runs allowed in 2015.
Of qualified players, Daniel Murphy leads baseball with a batting average of .394.
Murphy's OBP is .467, third in all of baseball.
Murphy has nine rbi and 10 runs.
Kyle Seager is last of qualified players, batting .133
Seager has 10 rbi and 11 runs.
Only 31 hitters with qualified at bats do NOT have a homer.
Among them are Lucroy, Heyward, Carlos Gomez, Justin Turner, Rendon, and Kevin Pillar.
Here's an oddity, Nick Markakis has no homers, but the leadoff man is among league leaders with 15 rbi.
Markakis has only scored eight times.
Paul Goldschmidt has 22 walks, leading baseball.
He has scored more from his homers (5) than from those 22 walks. He has 12 runs scored.
Colby Rasmus has seven homers and 16 walks. He has scored 11 runs.
Ian Kinsler has walked twice. Kinsler has scored 16 runs.
Robinson Cano had six rbi last night.
Justin Upton has four rbi this year.
Chris Davis has one hit vs. a southpaw.
Last year, he had 50.
More than 50 players are striking out at a pace of once per game or more.
Nolan Arenado has eight homers.
Arenado has been struck out just six times.
Buster Posey has three homers and seven rbi.
Trevor Brown has three homers and seven rbi.
Only three players have four homers and four stolen bases.
Altuve 5/9, Betts 4/5, Suarez 5/4
David Price E.R.A. is 5.76. Price is 3-0
Felix Hernandez E.R.A. is 1.80. King Felix is 1-2
Kevin Jepsen has seven k's.
Jepsen has seven decisions as well. two Wins, three losses, and two Saves.
Looking for a Closer in Waiting? Tolleson, KRod, McGee, and Cody Allen all have E.R.A's above 7.00
Ever hear of a one category player? Sure you have. Ever seen one with Runs being the category?
Anthony Rendon's line this year- .241/13/0/1/0

Loved your post, Dan. Some interesting stuff in there. Perception and reality are not one in the same.

I'll just add one more tidbit that at least I find interesting: while few are surprised that the Braves have the worst record in the NL at 4-16, how many realize that the worst team in the AL so far are the ... Houston Astros at 6-15. (Unfortunately, like myself, I'm guessing other Luke Gregorson owners know this, as it seems like eons ago when he last had a save opportunity. Did not see this coming, that's for sure. Am curious to see how they respond over the next few weeks.)

I don't have to tell everyone that that's bad!!
But I would like to add some context to that number.

The Braves are "on pace" for 24 HR's this season.
I think that obviously they won't just hit 24, so lets double their current projection to 48.
In the Division Era (non strike/lockout seasons) of baseball, only 1 team hit fewer than 50 HR's in a season.
The 1979 Houston Astros only hit 49 HR's while playing in the cavernous Houston Astrodome.

The unexpected thing is, the Astros had a record of 89-73  that season.
The Braves are currently 4-16 and "on pace" for 33-129.

We are watching some epic futility with the 2016 Atlanta Braves.

Won't you guys be surprised when the Braves are .500 at the ASB! :D

The Red Sox had their 'Curse of the Bambino'.

The Braves are enduring their 'Curse of Custer'.

By the way, the Chicago Cubs won their first game, the same year that the Braves got the better of Custer.
1876.
They beat Louisville in Louisville.
Home field advantage was something not needed for the Cubs then.
And no, David Ross did not catch or even attend the game with Betsy.
Custer, on the other hand, is still lamenting his away game.

yeah, that makes no sense. props to them for being smart enough to walk him, we're going to see a lot more of that this year. they lose their props for pitching to him in that situation, they were lucky that it "worked."
