Fun With Numbers

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Wed May 31, 2017 10:30 am

51 hitters have at least 10 home runs.

Despite all the hype about shortstops coming into the year, only one player at the position joins this group.
Francisco Lindor (11)

And only one 2B.Robinson Cano (10)

There are two other hitters who qualify as middle infielders, but no longer play up the middle.
Manny Machado (10) and Ryan Schimpf (13)

Ryan Zimmerman is batting .371 and hasn't gotten hurt.
What drops first, his average or health?

What is worse than owning Mike Trout and Starling Marte over the next two months?
Owning Alex Gordon and Alcides Escobar during the past two months.
Gordon- .173/10/0/9/1
Escobar- .180/14/0/11/0
Literally, zero category players.
Or even, minus category players given their average and who we could have replaced them with.
New statistic, Loss Above Replacement

Brandon Belt has a consistent excuse for not hitting with power. His Ball park.
Belt- .237/27/10/22/2
What is Edwin Encarnacion's excuse?
Encarnacion- ..232/23/10/22/1

After two months of the season, Rougned Odor's at bats (208) are higher than his batting average (.207)

In one month of Spring Training, Maikel Franco and Willson Contreras had six home runs.
In two months of the regular season, Franco has six homers, Contreras, five.

Sandy Leon- 101 at bats, .228/12/4/15/0
Gary Sanchez 95 at bats, .263/14/4/12/1

In fantasy baseball, it is possible to be a wonderful .212 hitter...
Joey Gallo- .212/36/16/33/4
Not if expectations were raised too highly...
Jonathon Villar- .212/26/5/24/12

Gallo is tied for third in the American League in Runs. His usual batting spot, seventh.
Tied with Gallo, are Mike Trout and Jose Bautista.
Wasn't it just yesterday when we were asking, "When is Bautista going to hit?"

182 at bats and hits third almost every day...
Lorenzo Cain has 10 rbi...
Pablo Sandoval has 10 rbi

Two routes to the same number...
Matt Carpenter is third in all of baseball in taking first base on four balls (34)
Carpenter has nine homers and hits third.
Jose Peraza has walked the least of any qualified player in baseball (5)
Peraza only has one homer and hits up and down the lineup.
Both Carpenter and Peraza have scored 24 runs this year.

Translated from Spanish to Fantasy, 'Odubel' means 'Oh Crap'.

What a crappy leadoff hitter.
Charlie Blackmon has only taken 12 base on balls this year.
Blackmon has 13 home runs.
Top 10 in every roto category but the one he was most drafted for, stolen bases (4).

Having less walks and more homers is a good thing....except to Sabrs.
Here are the other hitters with more homers than walks...
Adam Duvall (14/11)
Ryan Zimmerman (14/13)
Scott Schebler (15/13)
Keep swinging, boys!

Some opinion about strike outs....
I could care less about the k stats on some hitters.
The K we give away should also be received with home runs.
When that does not happen, it's a problem.
K/HR ratio if you will.
Here are some problems...
Keon Broxton 67/5
Jonathon Villar 64/5
Kevin Kiermeier 61/5
Nick (EARN Nicholas!) Castellanos (58/4)
By the way, Aaron Judge is 18th in baseball with 56 strike outs.
Never mentioned.

Bryce Harper has been hit by one pitch this year.

No excuses.
We see E5 do this every year.

May 31, 2016 - .240/.313/.447 10HR
May 31, 2015 - .216/.300/.437 12HR
May 31, 2014 - .266/.352/.596 16HR (9HR came between May 20-29)

Dan
Just love that Stuff you are writing about numbers. Never mind, I should say about anything you write and come up with. Thank you so much for that. Here is a freaky one for you.

After his 3rd hit today A. Judge's line read as follow.

Ab 3
Runs 3
Hits. 3
RBI. 3
BA .333

This, from a hitter who was moved to the number 3 spot this week.
Awesome stuff, Gaetan.

And... the most road wins in baseball. Crazy year.
If Tulo and Ellsbury had not gone on the dl, it could have even been called an upside down year.
Thankfully, they are a constant. :D

How about a few more.....

Yoenis Cespedes played in 159 games in 2015....when he became a Met :D
If Cespedes plays in the game tonight, it will be the first time since April 20 that Cespedes has played in three consecutive games.

Aaron Judge went into last night's game ahead in triple Crown categories in the American League
(Nelson Cruz passed him in rbi last night)
June 12 is the latest date that any rookie has led in all triple crown numbers.

Stephen Strasburg gave up back to back homers yesterday.
First time that he has experienced that feeling.

Yu Darvish allowed one hit to the Astros, last night.
He has allowed one hit to a team four times in his career.
Each time, he was facing the Houston Astros.

In this year of the home runs and strike outs, there is only one player with qualifying at bats who has not homered.
Dee Gordon.

Gordon is an enemy of sabrmetricians.
No power and pitchers hardly walk him (Sabrs like to say that he never works a walk. Thinking a walk is in a batters control)
No matter how it is sliced, Gordon does not receive many free passes.
To illustrate that, over 30 players today, on June 13, have 31 bases on balls or more.
31 walks is a career high in a season for Gordon.

Elvis Andrus has seven homers. His career high is eight.

Yonder Alonso hit his ninth homer on May 7 of this year.
It matched Alonso's previous career high.
The 14 homers hit during the first two months of this season were more homers than Alonso had in 2015 and 2016, combined.

Here's my stat of the week:

Through 29.2 innings pitched, Kenley Jansen has exactly 50 strikeouts, which is a rate of 15.17 Ks per 9 IP.

Even more impressive, Jansen has zero walks this season. Zero. Zilch. Nada.

Wow!

Since May 29th atleast 1 mlb game has had at least 1 player hit 2 home runs in a game.
Some of them doing it twice during that streak.

Home runs and strikeouts are ruling the big leagues this year.
From Friday night to Tuesday night, there were 238 home runs hit. The most homers in a five day span in Major League history.

Last night, 290 hitters (missers?) struck out. An average of 19.33 strikeouts per game.
And THAT was the highest ratio of strikeouts in a schedule with at least 12 games, in Major League history.

In line with Roger's post, three Dodgers (Bellinger, Seager, Grandal) have had multi homer games on consecutive nights.

If not for Bellinger, Ian Happ might be raved about. He became the second fastest Cub (Bob Speaks) to reach 10 homers in Cubs history. Happ needed 34 games, Speaks, 32.

As fantasy players, we know that Ricky Nolasco is a loser.
If losing his next start, he will become the first Angels pitcher to lose eight straight starts in a year.

No numbers here, but in a 3 month long battle between Bartolo Colon and Bronson Arroyo for the 'When is he going to retire already?' award, Arroyo wins.

Eight players have hit 20 home runs this year.
None of them had even 30 last year.
Only two (Springer, Votto) had 20 all of last year.

Three pitchers have thrown over 100 innings this year. You can guess them.
Sale, Scherzer, and Kershaw.

Rick Porcello won the Cy Young Award last year.
Most fantasy players considered him 'Fools Gold' this year. They were right.
Porcello leads baseball in hits allowed with 124 this year.
If continuing, it would be the first time a Cy Young Award winner 'led' in that category the following year.

Nine pitchers have allowed 50 earned runs or more.
A list that includes Arroyo, Colon, Josh Tomlin, Kevin Gausman and other pitchers who have been sub par this season.
All have WHIP's of at least 1.40 and more, except for one.
Jeff Samardjuhduh has a sparkling 1.16 WHIP
Tomlin deserves a 'shout out' too. He has been that bad, while only allowing six base on balls in 14 starts.

Edinson Volquez is the 'wild man' of baseball. He leads baseball in walks allowed.
He is currently working on a 12-game streak of walking at least two batters a game.
He can throw a no-hitter, but not a no-walker.
He has not pitched in a game this year, without allowing a walk.

Jose Bautista was hit by one punch last year. Memorable.
Bryce Harper has been hit by one pitch this year. Memorable.

Nolan Arenado has 46 extra base hits in 73 games.
The last time a player had 100 extra base hits was in the middle of the steroid era and before the NFBC was created.
2001.

Hanley Ramirez (adp #76), is averaging one extra base hit every four games.

Buster Posey has 75 hits and 25 rbi.
Ryan Schimpf has 26 hits.... and 25 rbi.

Only six players have struck out more than Aaron Judge.
Nobody cares.

Ryon Healy has hit 17 homers and batting .278
Only sabrs care that he was walked just 11 times.

Brandon Belt could be on his way to a career high in drawing base on balls (44)
His owners don't care. Belt is 'hitting' .224

One last thing, a home run that is hit 380 feet could be belted, blasted, slugged, creamed, ripped, clobbered, destroyed. or bombed.
But a fly ball struck 10 feet longer and is caught, is just a fly ball.
In real life, fences make good neighbors.
In baseball, fences make good verbs.

Here's another stat I find interesting.

The White Sox play in what many consider to be a hitter's park. A short time ago, Jose Abreu hit his 13th home run of the season.

All 13 have been hit on the road. White Sox season ticket holders have yet to see Abreu go deep in person.

Here is one concerning just how bad Baltimore Orioles pitching has been. Especially in June.

On June 2, the Orioles beat the Red Sox 3-2
On June 24, the Orioles won 8-3

Those are the only days and games in which the Orioles allowed less than five runs during June.
Here are the Orioles Starters and their ERA's

Bundy..... 3.73 (June 5.93)
Miley...... 4.48 (June 7.94)
Gausman..6.47 (June 8.02)
Jimenez...7.26 (June 9.00)
Tillman...8.39 (June 11.14)

Last twelve games started:

Player A - 80.2 IP, 87 K's, 4 BB, 79 Hits, 11 HR

Player B - 81.0, 91 K's, 16 BB, 64 Hits, 16 HR

Player A is Jeff Samardzija.

Player B is Clayton Kershaw.
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

In the days of everybody, but Dee Gordon, hitting home runs (steroids needed, again, Dee?),
Michael Fulmer has a streak of 73 2/3 innings without allowing a homer.
The longest such streak since 2015.

Every year that there are more homers, juiced balls are the supposed culprit.
Are the balls getting smaller too?
We are setting strike out records at the same time.
Indians Starter Corey Kluber struck out 64 'missers' in June.
The last Indians hurler that accomplished as many whiffs was Sudden Sam McDowell.
Anytime I can use a Sudden Sam McDowell reference, I'll do it.

I get tired of announcers stating that a team is 75-0 when leading after eight innings.
Here is the anti-stat to that...
The Nationals have lost four games when leading by MULTIPLE runs heading into the ninth inning.
Mike Rizzo is not one to make quick decisions, is he?!

The Braves finally cut ties with Bartolo Colon.
This year, Colon found something he could not eat.
Innings.

Cy Young Award winner Rick Porcello leads baseball with 10 losses.
During the first half of this year, he has won as many games as he lost last year, four.
By the way, and not surprisingly, Porcello's k-rate is higher than last year.
More coming on Porcello.

Jeff Samarduhjuh has allowed just three walks in his last 11 starts.
The last Giants pitcher to do that was (gulp) Christy Mathewson.
And before the jokes fly, no, I never saw Mathewson pitch.

One team has three hitters with at least 18 home runs.
The answer will probably surprise you. Think about it.
It's at the bottom of this post.

Jason Vargas has won 11 games.
It's the second most games Vargas has won in his career.
A career that began in 2005.
Yes, it's June 30.

Clayton Kershaw leads baseball in the one stat that NFBC'ers feared most during draft season.
Games Started (17)

Who has the most extra base hits?
If simply looking it up, Nolan Arenado has 46 extra base hits.
This puts in perspective what our friend, Rick Porcello has done this year.
He actually leads baseball with 55 extra base hits allowed.
Porcello has also given up 20 more hits than ANY pitcher this year.
He wins the Sigh...Just Sigh Award this year.

As far as home run leaders, things are similar to last year.
Last year, at the All Star break, there were 18 hitters with 20 homers.
Led by Mark Trumbo with 28.
This year, 14 hitters have 20 homers.
Led by Aaron Judge with 27.
Only eight hitters ended 2016 with 40 homers.
A further illustration that 'On Pace' blows.

Here is an interesting note from the above home run statistics.
Of players who finished 2016 with 40 home runs, only one has belted 20 homers this year.
Khris Davis.

Also, at the All Star break last year, Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo had 46 homers between them.
Those were the days.

Only nine players have stolen as many as 15 bases.
Of the nine, only one has really helped in hr/rbi.
Elvis Andrus (10/46)

The answer to the three teammates.
They hail from that homer haven in Miami.
Stanton (21), Ozuna (20), Bour (18)

gm to rizzo- "you need a closer- we have mr. X. why won't you trade? rizzo-" for the 10,000 time- the mets, the braves, the phillys, the marlins" . seriously- i have seen it twice now on mlb network- they talk about the nats needing a closer and FIVE MINUTES LATER talk about how the phillies, mets, braves and marlins will be sellers at the deadline. that is why it is called negotiating.
