Is JD Martinez Crumby?

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Wed Feb 07, 2018 3:27 pm

As fantasy players, there is something that each of us ALWAYS, ALWAYS use as a basis for drafting players.
Recency bias.
We can't help ourselves. We are a 'What have you done for me lately?' group.
Last year, Jonathon Villar was being drafted in the second round.
One reason.
Recency bias.

In another realm, somebody else is depending on recency bias.
JD Martinez.
For players, recency bias is counted on.
If a player has a great contract year, the player expects a great contract.
Especially with an agent blowing numbers out of proportion.
So with a slow market, it was no surprise to read this blurb...

'According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, free agent J.D. Martinez "is telling people that he is fed up with the Red Sox's inflexibility and would rather sign with another club."

Rosenthal notes that this might be a case of "posturing" on the part of Martinez and his agent Scott Boras, who have both become increasingly frustrated by the lack of action and high-dollar offers on the open market this winter. Boston is still believed to have made the most lucrative proposal to Martinez at five years, $125 million. The 30-year-old slugger began the offseason looking for something closer to seven years, $200 million after tallying 45 homers and 104 RBI in just 119 games last summer between the Tigers and Diamondbacks.'

Martinez and Boras sounds like they're miffed that the Red Sox won't bid against themselves.
That they're miffed that the Red Sox won't extend the years to nearly match Boras optimistic $200 million dollar boast after last season ended.
And, the Red Sox need a power hitter.

But, you know what?
Recency bias is almost the only thing Martinez has going for him.
He was simply fantastic last year.
His age 30 year.
Whoever signs Martinez gets his age 31 36 years.
If Boras squeezes another year or two, it'll be his age 37 and age 38 years.
Who wants that?

Martinez has played seven years in Major League Ball.
Only one year has he played in more than 125 games.
Only one time has he had 500 at bats.
He is not a great defender.
Simply, JD Martinez is not a superstar.
He is a very good hitter, who happens to be the best looking hitter on the free agent market this year.

For 2018, Boston NEEDS JD Martinez.
They would love to have his power.
What they DO NOT NEED is JD Martinez in six years.
Players are like Doritos.
Teams buying players and buyers of Doritos get the best as soon as they are opened.
As time goes by, the production of the player and the chips are less tasty until finally, there are only crumbs.
It's why Doritos doesn't sell bags of crumbs.
Nobody will buy that!
Why should the Red Sox?
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
