50 Things of Stuff...or so

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Thu Nov 16, 2017 7:44 am

I have got to get some sleep...insomnia is a bitch....
Here is my way of being 'productive' while awake for the night...

1. 10 of the last 20 NL batting leaders have come from the Colorado Rockies...

2. Only one of those hitters was a repeat title winner....Larry Walker

3. The Dodgers haven't had a batting title since Tommy Davis in 1963...

4. Davis won back to back Championships in '62 and '63...

5. Since 2006, the AL has had three repeat Batting Champions...

6. Jose Altuve, Miguel Cabrera, and Joe Mauer...

7. The last seven years, either Altuve or Cabrera have won the batting title in the American League...

8. From 1920-25, Rogers Hornsby led the NL every year in Batting Average

9. Hornsby hit over .400 three times during that span and averaged .396 during that time

10. Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947 and led the NL in Batting Average in '49

11. Willie Mays led in '54, Aaron in '56 and '58, then Davis in '62 and '63

12. They were the only black players to win NL Batting Championships from '47 through the 60's

13. From 1972-1997, 22 of 26 Batting Champions in the NL, were black men.

14. The American League has had six black Batting Champions...total

15. Barring two years, from 1995 to 2007, at least one hitter from each league reached 50 home runs...

16. 2017 was the first year it has happened since....

17. Supposedly, stolen bases have slowed down, between Billy Hamilton, Trea Turner, and Dee Gordon, there were 165 thefts...

18. That is nearly as many as the top 10 base stealers in 1950

19. In 1950, 11 players stole double digit bases, only one, (Sam Jethroe) stole more than 20 (35)

20. 85 players stole double digit bases in 2017...

21. 16 players scored 100 runs in 2017...

22. Dee Gordon (2) was the only player to do so with less than 18 homers...

23. Miami was the only team that had three players score 100 runs...

24. Giancarlo Stanton, Dee Gordon, and Christian Yelich

25. 23 hitters had at least 100 rbi...

26. None of those hitters came from the World Champion Astros

27. Marwin Gonzalez, who spent most of his time batting fifth, sixth, or seventh led the Astros with 90...

28. Gonzalez hit .360 with men in scoring position...

29. In 15 at bats with the bases loaded, Gonzalez hit .533 and knocked in 20 of those runs....

30. Gonzalez only hit .204 in April, allowing him to be on the free agent market for many NFBC leagues last year...

31. The Giants and Tigers finished with the worst records in baseball (64-98) in 2017...

32. Three years ago, the Tigers (90-72) won their division...

33. Three years ago, the Giants won the World Series...

34. Six different teams have been in the last three World Series...

35. That hasn't happened since 2003-06 when eight different teams were in the Big Show...

36. Scott Boros had this quote, "Payroll slashing is not good for Major League Baseball"...

37. Wait Scott, who is not good for again?

38. Alex Colome had 47 Saves last year...

39. The Miami Marlins had 34...split between six pitchers

40. 33 people were Saved from alligator attacks in Florida last year...

41. I made that up....

42. Corey Knebel threw 76 innings and struck out 126 hitters...

43. Fernando Rodney threw 55 innings and had an ERA of 4.23...

44. Both had 39 Saves...

45. Saves Suck...

46. Jim Johnson had as many Saves as Aroldis Chapman (22)....really

47. Not only that, but Chapman only had eight more strike outs than Johnson...really again

48. Not only that, but Jim Johnson has led baseball in Saves twice (2012-13)

49 Aroldis Chapman has never led the league in Saves...

50. Not only that, but Chapman has never finished in the top five in Saves....ever

51. But he sure can throw hard, right?....

OK, Sleepy, here is some useful trivia to put you to sleep. Billy Hamilton of the Reds is not even the best base-stealer with the name Billy Hamilton. In 1889, Billy Hamilton stole 111 bases for the Kansas City Cowboys. In 1890 and 1891, he stole 102 and 111 bases, respectively, for the Philadelphia Phillies. He also had seasons with 98 and 97 stolen bases for the Phillies in 1894 and 1895. Later, he stole 83 and then 66 bases for the Boston Beaneaters (love that name) in 1896 and 1897. All told, the "original" Billy Hamilton stole 912 bases over a 14-year career. Like his namesake, however, he only managed 40 home runs during that period.

I did know that.
Not that I ever saw him or anything, but he was a lot better hitter than the 'new' Billy Hamilton...

Alright, here are a few more "interesting" baseball names:

Johnny Dickshot (OF for Pirates, Giants and White Sox in 1930's-40's)

Rusty Kuntz (OF for White Sox and Tigers in late-1970's to 80's)

Cannonball Titcomb (P in the late-1880's)

Dick Pole (P for Red Sox and Mariners in 1970's)

Jack Glasscock (SS in the 1870's, 80's and 90's; the all-time leader in WAR for the St. Louis Maroons)

Pussy Tebeau (an OF that played 2 games for the Cleveland Spiders in 1895)

Finally, my all-time favorite, Bud Weiser (no, seriously), who played OF for the Phillies in 1915 and 1916.

Little known fact...Bud Weiser was actually married to Ann Heuser!

OK...so I made that one up...couldn't resist... :?
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

No, but it reminds me of a poem...maybe by Robert Burns:

There once was a girl named Ann Heuser
Who said "No man would ever surprise her!"
But Pabst took a chance,
Found a Schlitz in her pants,
and now she is sadder, Bud Weiser!
