catchers and 500 Homer Stuff

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Fri Nov 03, 2017 12:08 pm

You think your baseball team has problems?

Here are the Tampa Rays Opening Day catchers over the last 16 years....

Derek Norris
Hank Conger
ReneRivera
Jose Molina
John Jaso
Dioneer Navarro
Toby Hall
John Flaherty

In that same span of time, the Yankees have only had six Opening Day catchers.
Most of whom have made their mark in the game...

Gary Sanchez
Brian McCann
Francisco Cervelli
Russell Martin
Jorge Posada
Joe Girardi

Yadier Molina has been St. Louis Opening Day catcher for 14 years running.
The last Cardinals Opening Day catcher before Molina?
His Manager, Mike Matheny.

We live in another home run age. Everybody seems to be hitting them.
However, it is not yet reflecting on the All-time list.
There is only one current player with more than 600 homers. Albert Pujols.
None have 500.
Adrian Beltre and Miguel Cabrera have 462 home runs and will probably reach 500, not threaten 600.
Carlos Beltran has 435 and will not see 500.
And only six hitters have 300 homers or more.
Edwin Encarnacion, Jose Bautista, Nelson Cruz, Robbie Cano, Matt Holliday, and Ryan Braun.
The odds are against any of those hitters reaching 500 homers.
Encarnacion closest with 348.

27 players have struck 500 homers.
Nineteen are alive, eight are dead.
12, during the steroid era, 15 not.
Nine players have struck 600 home runs.
Six of those came from the steroid era.
All alive, except Babe Ruth.
Only nine of the 27 500-homer hitters have/has a .300 batting average.
Only three of those played during the steroid era...Pujols, Manny Ramirez, and Frank Thomas.
At .305, Pujols has a chance of dropping from that list.
Although the Yankees dominate statistics through time, only two Yankees are members of the 500 homer club.
Ruth and Mantle.
Other players such as Reggie Jackson, Gary Sheffield, and Alez Rodriguez played for the Yankees, but did most of their home run terror on other teams.
The Giants have four members of the 500 homer club.
Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Mel Ott, and Barry Bonds.
Amusing now, in that the current Giants have been the lightest home run hitting team in baseball for the past few years.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
