The Vogeling of Rhys Hoskins

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Thu Sep 28, 2017 10:15 am

I have to give Bryan Vogel credit. He was all over Rhys Hoskins from the get-go last year.
Hoskins was undrafted in a lot of Draft Championship drafts last year.
Virtually untouched in 30 player roster drafts.
Bryan selected him in almost every draft.
Including the 21st round of the PreMature Draft.

Bryan deserves every kudo for Hoskins talent and abilities scouting.
Of course, the problem was that Bryan thought more of Hoskins than the Phillies did.
While Hoskins banged out home run after home run in the minor leagues, Bryan would yell at the Phillies within his own mind..."BRING THE DAMN KID UP TO THE BIGS!!!"

They did. Finally.
And when they did, Hoskins went off.
He hit home runs even more prodigious than in the Minors. A find.

In the end, Bryan was both right and wrong about Hoskins.
He correctly judged the talent in power hitting.
Incorrectly, he misjudged that Tommy Joseph would hit just well enough to have the Phils keep Hoskins in the minor leagues for the better part of four months.

What will drafters do with Hoskins this year? Where will he be drafted?
Hoskins will have 1B/OF eligibility next year, appealing to positionality drafters.
His Big Bang theory will also be a draw for drafters.
The thought of hitting in the middle of a fast-improving lineup will also have drafters salivating.
Not to mention (but I am) that the National League East (except Washington)may be the easiest division in baseball from a Starting Pitcher perspective.
To make it short, there is a lot to like about Hoskins.
A comparison may be Gary Sanchez from last year.
He has only shown good qualities.

So again, where does he get drafted?
I believe he will be drafted in the second or third round in the PreMature Draft.
I also believe that he will be taken as late as the fifth or sixth round in later drafts.
Only to have him back in the second or third rounds when the Big Drafts come around and the hype machine starts up.
In Hoskins case, Bryan Vogel was way ahead of the hype.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!
