A Well Paced Draft Option

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Mon Dec 24, 2012 11:05 am

Drafts make us crazy. They do.
We want everything to be perfect for a draft. We want it to start when we want it to start. We want every player we're hoping for. We want everybody else to draft quietly, or timely, or just whatever suits us best.

I've gotten a call from a wife who was really upset. As her husband was gurneyed into the ambulance after heart attack symptoms, he looked deep into her eyes and said, "DON'T FORGET TO TELL DAN THAT I WANT JOHN ELWAY WITH THE FIRST PICK OF THE DRAFT IF I CAN'T MAKE IT THERE!
Even this year, I got a call from Stan Kaye in his hospital bed telling me he didn't want to hold up our E-Mail draft and told me the players (he was on the corner) that he wanted.
Roger Martin made selections while his little girl was undergoing brain surgery.

We're a different breed.
We put a lot of time into each selection in a draft and we know that others do as well. We're the best players in the world, and that's still not good enough.
We want to be THE best player in the world.
We know it's a mythical crown.
Lindy has won the Main Event twice and scads of money. But, I'm not ready to call him the best player in the world.
To each of us, that title is reserved for us.

But again, I am getting off course.
The drafts do make us crazy.
Myself, I don't like sitting next to gabbers. There's enough time for talk before and after.
But worse, there was a guy way back in 2007 who unknowingly threw me off my game.
I won't mention this guys name, I've gotten in enough trouble dropping names!
Especially since he still drafts in NFBC events.

We had just finished our first 10 rounds and it was time for the first break. This was the 2007 Main Event in Las Vegas. I wanted to look at some notes and didn't need to use the bathroom, so I stayed seated. I studied till the first guy came back to the table. He sat next to me, but the aroma from his plate arrived first. He came back to the table with Sandwiches and chips enough to feed the whole table. This guy weighs more than I, which is saying something because I'm 6'5", 280. And I like a sandwich and chips as much as the next guy. But, this guy started making love to these things!
I was fixated.
I couldn't take my eyes off this guy! Never have I seen a guy enjoy food as much as him.
It was like he had been on an island with nothing but coconuts and pineapple for the two weeks leading up to this draft.
And I'm sitting there watching him, and he brings his fingers to his mouth in an effort to sticky each sesame seed that fell off his bread, and make sure his plate was clean. Then, did the same thing for any salt remaining from his potato chips.
Not once does this guy look at anything else but his sandwich and Chips. And now, those pudgy fingers were whetted so as not to leave a spec behind....
And then I hear it....
NUMBER TWO! YOU HAVE 30 SECONDS LEFT!
I just laughed at myself. I realized I was on the clock, hadn't heard who the guy next to me took, and took the best player, hoping it wasn't the same guy that was just called.
It wasn't.
I spent six months looking forward to this draft.... and watch a guy eat for 10 minutes.
What a Maroon!

Anyways, speaking of drafts....
Greg has the right idea with reduced hour drafting and regional drafting. If anything, these drafts mark that the drafters will, at the least, be on the same page.
I'd like to draft in a slo draft after the New Year, but after last year's draft, I just haven't had the urge to do it again in the NFBC Draft Room.
I got notes from three others from that draft of last year, stating they will never do another draft and David has said the same thing. That draft left scars that are still unhealed.
Anyway, I kind of want to guarantee a well paced draft.
So, if you are a drafter who likes a good pace and loves to bullshit on the Message Boards, shoot me a PM.
When/If we can get 15 like minds together, we'll draft with an 8 hour clock, so that we can still sleep and pick, but know that others are doing their best to draft in a reasonable time.
And you can eat all the sandwiches and chips you want.

I had the title of this thread in mind when I was taking a Marcel at work after eating too much queso.

Just to update-
This draft will start on Jan 5 or possibly a day or two later to allow finished vacations and more studying.
A Jan 5 weekend start with the NFL playoffs as a backdrop may be optimum.
Anybody else ready?

Dan,
January 5 would be good for me. That 1st week of January is going to be busy at work for me. I will adapt if it starts during the week, but that weekend is much better. How about draft picks on Friday and a noon (ET) start on Saturday?

Thanks,
Mark

I wouldn't mind pushing it back a week (or a few days), although it's not a deal breaker. I look to forward to a fun, reasonable pace with committed players.

It may end up that way, Joe.
January 5 will be the earliest start date. It could be later if that works for most and doesn't bother the rest.

Is this an NFBC run event or is this something you are running? If it's something you are running where it's a full payout I'm interested.

Sorry, I should have been more explicit. This will be held in the NFBC draft room.

His name is not Bob. :D
I'll let you know the first name during the draft.
I figure we'll let the sleeping clock be dictated by somebody on the Message Boards saying something like, "I'm turning in, if it gets to me, go to sleep, I'll pick in the morning...
