Sure Doug.

We are opposites when it comes to a draft. You like reliability in the first four rounds. I contend that there is no such thing as reliability. Anybody can have an off year, anybody can get hurt.

I like talent. If a player has talent, most of the time, the talent comes to the forefront.

2010 was a lost year for Upton. It seemed he got nicked up any time momentum had built.

Third rounders Kinsler, Youkilis, and Morneau will get a pass for last year since injuries incapacitated them. For players that get nicked during the year and play through them, fantasy'ers are more harsh. The numbers are the numbers whether playing in pain or pain free.

Diamondback ownership hand out bonuses for strike outs. Hey, what other explanation is there? And those strike outs do scare me a little. But Upton oozes talent and is one of the very few players in baseball capable of a 40-40 season. If he does it next year, I want him on my side.

I actually drafted J Upton at 2-1 in the main last year (or maybe 1-15 along with D Wright). I still like him and like the pick there. THe only thing that worries me, and will lead me to stay awya, is his recent diagnosis of a labrum tear, that will be treated with rest. To me shoulder injuries are the scariest injuries for both hitters and pitchers...they sap power from both and lead to full tears that require season ending surgery. To me Upton, just didnt look right even when healthy last year. I am going to stay away this year, not because he lacks talent, but only because of the affirmatively diagnosed injury.

One thing I'm finding so far is that it's difficult to move last year's ADP out of my head. I see the name Nelson Cruz and my immediate thought is "ooh, good sleeper in the 6th round", which of course is accurate if the date is March 2010. I need to shake out the cobwebs and really start to focus not only on the 2010 numbers but, just as Doughboy has indicated, to analyze the story behind those numbers. That's a great benefit of participating in this mock.

What draft did Cruz make it to 6th round in 2010? He didnt even make it past the 4th round in 12 team online championship.

By the main event, I would have pulled the trigger on him at the 2-3 turn. I am curious as to which 2nd round player in our draft here made it to the 6th round.

Last March Pence was going in the 5/6th rounds of most drafts. His numbers this past 2010 season are very similar to his 2009 numbers, which in turn were better than his ’08 numbers. And while some may use that as a reason to select him again in the sixth round, I used it as a reason to bump him up. For me, he passed the Missouri/Missouri test.

Now as I said when I made the pick, round 2 might be early. But over the past two years only three players have put together back to back 25+hr/14+sb/.282+ba….. Pujols, Braun, and Pence.

So, I don’t know if it was Pence or not, but if it was, I’d love to hear the reasons for not taking him in the first five rounds.

Pence in the 4th round is a very good value, I would think. He has not been spectacular, but his consitency has been great and he had a stretch towards the end of Aug-Sept when he showed flashes of becoming elite.

2011 Message Board Draft

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Fri Oct 15, 2010 9:00 am

'The best six months of my life, I was comatose'

A man, jaywalking, was smacked by a car. He was taken to the hospital, received the best of care, but despite their best efforts, he fell into a coma.

His wife told the staff, that it was his wishes to keep him alive as long as possible. He believed that the mind could overcome physical human frailties.

While on tubes, monitors would intermidtantly (sp) sing out, giving the staff and his wife hope of coming out of the coma, but then settle down just as quick. This went on for six months.

One day, out of nowhere, the man woke up. His wife was holding his hand, sobbing.

He said, "who are you?"

"I'm your wife, you big lug!"

The man paused. "Oh wait, it's all coming back to me now"

"What do you mean?", the wife asked.

"Well, when I was comatose, I wasn't married.

I was a porn star. That part of my life is a lot more vivid to me right now, than my married life with you. I'm sure I'll get over it in time."

The doctor said, "Well, that explains the sporadic nature of the monitors!"

The wife hugged him and cried, the husband sighed.

Two days later, the hospital received papers that they were being sued for giving the man an unwanted penus reduction.
