2011 Message Board Draft

Post by BEF » Wed Oct 13, 2010 6:23 am

Is it crazy to pick a guy with 4 months in the bigs early in the 3rd round? Yup.

But what if he's now the second best hitting catcher in baseball? What if you know darned well he won't make it back to you at the end of the 4th? Does it matter that VMart and McCann were going in the 3rd round last year?

Discussion/opinions welcome...

Glad this is an early mock and not the real thing, not sure if I'd otherwise have the guts to pull this trigger:

Posey was taken at 3.8 in the pay draft.

After VMart, but before McCann.

Every year there seems to be a top four or five catchers.

It looks like it's no different for next year.

1. Ballpark amongst the worst

2. Supporting cast...not great...if he really turns into a stud...he will never see a pitch

3. Short resume (please ask Pablo Sandoval owners)

4. He is a catcher and thus will get less abs and greater odds for injuries

5. He is a catcher and their numbers wear down over a season

6. Buster's body type lends itself to being worn down in C position

ALl of that said he probably will go in 3-4th rd so if you love him, you have to grab him

I like the comment about Sandoval although I'd contend that Posey is simply a better athlete with obviously better conditioning, which should help offset some of the fatigue. But the fact that he's only been successful for two-thirds of one season is the part that scares me.

Main reason for picking him is that I like to take at least one of the top catchers, and I didn't think he, McCann or VMart would make it back to the late 4th.

I like the debates and analysis of the picks. Good job Brian. I hope all of us do a little of that with each pick. What the heck. I think the second and third round is definitely up for grabs and all of us feel a little suspect when making some of these choices. Discussing them can only help all of us, which is what this early draft is all about.

Good stuff and keep the commentaries coming, whether they are good or bad. We're all trying to figure this last season out and trying to make some sense of the season ahead. Crazy, crazy already and it's just the early part of Round 3. Keep the picks coming. I may have some surprises at the turn! :D

victor martinez- take that big guy. of course posey could play in a hitters park like texas and an easy position like outfield or second base. that is why cruz, hamilton and kinsler are never hurt. or 3rd base like chipper and aramis ramirez or in a hitters park and 1st base like yooooouuuuk!

Mike, I actually think V Mart is the better pick for the third round then Posey.

1. He actually plays 1st and DH, which gives him both rest and more abs then a typical catcher

2. While I dont think you have huge potential for a breakout type year, I think his good numbers are relatively assured (relative being operative word)

3. He is routinely surrounded by good hitters and good table setters

4. Plays in good hitters' park

Mike, I hope that a lot of players studying that draft think that McAnn was a significant part of the reason that he did so well....because I do not see it that way. Doug

My first three picks;

1.3 Miguel Cabrera; .310ba/ 30+hr/ 100+rbi are about as close to a lock as you could get. If he had Prince Albert’s “speed”, it would be a coin flip for number 1.

2.13 Hunter Pence; Maybe early for this guy, but three straight 25hr seasons with double digit steals and back to back .282 average say second round to me. He’s not a superstar, but you won’t be looking back in October saying “that pick killed me”.

3.3 Ian Kinsler; Has only played 120+ games once. Older than M Cabrera and Pence  . Here is my big upside/risk pick at a middle infield position.
