Opening Day Stuff

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Mon Apr 03, 2017 5:31 pm

To the folks that do not see the decrease of quality pitching in the Major Leagues, I give you...
Opening Day

Jhoulys Chacin on Opening Day. Scott Feldman on Opening Day. Jerome Hellickson on Opening Day.
Junior Guerra on Opening Day. Kendall Graveman on Opening Day. Ricky Nolasco on Opening Day.

These are NOT oPENING dAY PITCHERS!
Stop the carnage! No wonder every hitter is going for home runs.
That is 20 percent of Opening Day pitchers listed above.
No wonder pitchers like Jered Weaver, Bronson Arroyo, and Clay Bucchholz are still here.
Seriously, these pitchers have no business going near a Big League mound, yet, they will be starting during the coming week.
It's a 'hanger on'ers year.
These guys don't eat innings, innings eat them.

It's been said that midwest fans are among the most knowledgeable fans in baseball.
And they set a regular season attendance record today to watch...Scott Feldman.
Not smart.
I'd rather see Marty Feldman!
Even now!
How can Scott Feldman have a Major League job, whiled Angel Pagan is still waiting on a contract?
Pitchers are bad, fences are being moved in, and some think the ball is juiced.
Gee, why are there more homers again?

Christian Bethancourt pitched today.
Ok, that was being too kind. Bethancourt threw pitches to the Dodgers.
Bethancourt is not as good at pitching as he is not good at catching.
A Padre.

A Boston broadcaster praised Jackie Bradley for taking a pitch after Bradley saw that Xander Bogaerts had a great jump off first base is n stealing second.
Really?
Bradley is that talented to look at a Bogaerts jump while processing a pitch hurtling almost 100 mph at him?
Incredible.
The broadcaster omitted the fact that the pitch was an unhittable ball.
Ugh.
These guys already get too much praise. Quit heaping.

Greg Holland got the Save today.
He did not look like Greg Holland.
His owners are going to get a couple of those 1/3 inn, 5 ER lines.

Bryce Harper always looks so hitterish on Opening Day.
Five years in a row with a homer on Opening Day.
One year, his attention span, afterwards, lasted the whole year.

Is anybody else tired of the beards?
I feel like buying Smith Bros cough drops when watching games.
No more 'fresh faced' kids' as Vin Scully used to say.
And yes, Mr. Scully, you were missed.

Is there a more boring sounding game than the Rockies-Brewers?
Two years in a row they've opened against each other.
Five million tv's in the Greater Denver and Greater Milwaukee areas on at game time.
By the fourth inning, memories were jarred, folks remembering why they don't watch these teams, and soon only bars and taverns had the game on.

Surprise! Osuna is not healthy enough to Close.
Fantasy owners hate surprises.
I don't own him much, but did feel for his owners.
Just tell us, Jays.
Who are you helping by keeping the news away from the public?
By the way, how is Grilli working out for you?

One more time...
The Padres signed a Starter deemed not good enough for the Angels!
The Angels who are opening with Ricky Nolasco!
Jered Weaver's agent could sell pimples to teenagers!

Thor and Volquez throw 11 innings of shutout ball between them.
No W.
The W almost becomes the almighty stat. We can foresee every other stat in some way, shape or form.
The W?
It has us weeping.

Matt Strahm, after Andrew Miller and Delin Betances may have been the nost popular middle reliever drafted.
1/3 inn, 4 er
Last year, isn't this year.

Oh wait.
Jeanmar Gomez gave up two runs and still got the Save.
Last year IS this year!

There are several guys nicknamed 'Lefty' in the Baseball Encyclopedia.
Nobody named 'Righty'
Andy Nolan thinks that is fair.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

Looked up opening day 1970. Such legends like Gary Peters (redsox),Wally Bunker (royals),Lewis Krausse (brewers),Jim Merritt (reds),Joe Sparma (Expos),and Pat Dobson (padres) were the starting pitchers. Those were the days.

From 1982 to 1988, Rick Mahler (who was as pretty as his fastball was fast) was the Braves starter five times.....

Funny thing was he won the first four by a combined score of 19-0.
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

Good stuff, although Peters and Dobson had pretty nice careers.

Bunker had his moments too. The point is taken though.
Still, did any of those Pitchers open for a staff worse than the Padres this year?

1970 is before my time....I was an infant.

But I will give you 1980 instead......all of the opening day lineups!

In case anyone forgot, the Phillies won it in 1980.
