Fantasy Baseball and Our Real Wives

Post by DOUGHBOYS » Mon Jan 19, 2015 9:33 am

There is an unsung hero in our fantasy lives.
Our wife.
Our significant other (as opposed to insignificant other :D )
Our girlfrind.
Maybe even, boyfriend.

Most of us have somebody in our lives that 'put up with' what we do. Without their support, it would be tough to do what we do.
Sometimes, admittedly, we get out of hand.
We'd rather make our pick in a Draft Championship and prefer for our beloved to put the kids to bed.
Our computer and phones are a constant check.
My wife calls it 'Your Fantasy Life'.

We're men. Taking a dump and reading is multi-tasking for us.
Trying to hide the fact that we care more about our next pick than walking the dogs or putting the trash out is no good.
Sitting on our sofa with our wife, our arm around her, looking at the phone, in our hand behind her head to see if we're up won't work either.
We have to come out and admit that we have a passion. A passion that will annoy them.

After years, my wife is used to me sitting on the sofa with a laptop. Sometimes, it's not even on.
It has become an extension of me. And she's good with that.
One rule. I get one "What?"
If I have to say "What?" in response to a question or statement from her more than once during the night, laptop priviledges are revoked.
It's fair.

It was suggested in a wonderful fast/slow that I tell all of you this little story, so I will.
Admittedly, I may be a little more captivated by our hobby than most, but most of you will understand......

I was going through a typical day while my wife was at work.
MLB and their list of top Centerfielders was playing on our tv.
Our desktop computer had a window open to Baseball Reference.com
My laptop, on my lap as I was writing something for these Message Boards.
And, I was on the phone talking with Roger Martin talking about ball players and plotting how we would take over the Auction World in Las Vegas.
Unbeknownst to me, my wife had walked through our door, home early from work.
I hurriedly rushed off the phone with Rog to greet her.
She looked at Mike Trout on the tv.
She looked at the desktop computer with a picture of Avisail Garcia.
She looked at the laptop with 'National Fantasy Baseball Championship scrolled across the top.
She looked at the phone, as if visualizing a fantasy addicted fella like me.
She shook her head.
After what seemed an eternity, she said, "Just once, I'd like to catch you looking at porn like other husbands."

We couldn't do it without them.
And even though they give us the stink-eye when we're doing something we deem important, we love them.
They ground us.
And we love them for 'putting up with us'.
They don't know, but they are the real hero in our lives.
Fantasy seasons come and go, they, they are a constant.
And we wouldn't have it any other way.

How about you?
Do you have a story about your fantasy life and loved one in your life?
They cross paths so often, I'm betting there must be some good stories out there.
Please share.
On my tombstone-
Wait! I never had the perfect draft!

Nice write up.

No one story in particular; she knows its like a second job and for the most part understands after knowing each other for 20 years and married for 15. Get some eye rolls occasionally but I give her huge chunks of the winnings for putting up with it.

Our two boys will have to understand soon as well because they will have no choice but to play

I'm pretty fortunate. My wife tried to buy me an NFBC gift certificate for our anniversary last week. She couldn't find one on the website, so she just mailed a check directly to Greg.

Here's one.

Two years ago while driving in a blizzard I pulled over after receiving a text from MTM. Of course I was on the clock. With the kids in the back wondering what was happening my wife assured them that daddy was being careful and that we were going to wait out the storm. After seeing my draft sheet come out of the center console and after watching me cross off names my wife realized why we realized stopped. She played eye-spy with the kids while I picked and auto-one-round. She gave me a look like only should could and off we drove. After 5 minutes she finally spoke and said, thanks for pulling over and not drafting while driving. Awesome silent partner!

Hmmm....I'm in a slightly different position. I'm in a new relationship ( 6 months) and I'm trying to gently break her into this hobby. She got only a little peak of what this is all about as my teams were pretty sucky last year, so I wasn't exactly combing the waiver wire and rushing to the internet to check stats this past August.

I have a couple things going for me:
A. She's a (fair) baseball fan and actually gets to more games than I do in a season.
B. She has a 16 yo son who is an avid fan and we connect on this subject.

Now, I have to admit, she goes to the games just to get the bobbleheads, , but still....

So here's my approach to this "break in" period. I decided... for Christmas..., I would get her son a fantasy team of his own!
Now before Greg and Tom get all excited, I decided to start him with a CBS team rather than expose him to you wolves right off the bat.

But my thinking is that no mother, in her right mind (I know, how many women are in their right mind?) would criticize a hobby that fosters a bond between her son and her significant other?? Right??

Last night I showed her my huge clip board (insert your own joke) with all my research and notes. And just for the record, she was duly impressed. 8-)

Let's see how she handles the drafts.
I'm under the impression that most women would prefer a guy who drafts slowly.

My wife got a kick out of the comments. She decided to write something. Here is her comments:

My husband of 42 years is in denial. By that I mean he denies his all consuming thoughts of baseball. For example, while out on date night and I ask him a question, I get no response for at least 10 seconds. The answer to the inquiry is not Huh? What? Did you say something? When I accuse him of paying more attention to his next baseball pick or trade then to me, you guessed it--denial. Though he sidesteps the question of how many teams he has, and does indeed take his notes and computer everywhere we go, I do enjoy the benefit of a happy, smiling, contented husband.

Many of my friends here are "NFBC Charter Members" having played in the very first NFBC events in Las Vegas in 2004.

Well my wife is also a Charter Member (even if she didn't get the hat from Greg) because I drafted Saturday morning and we were married that evening in the Elvis Wedding Chapel and then had a memorable dinner at Valentino's with my wife's daughter and her best friend as well as a few fantasy baseball friends.

It was a GREAT day

To be in this thread you need to top it off with "it was a great day because I got married AND I drafted Manny Ramirez in round 1!

Wow! She's a keeper for sure. :D That would never happen in a million years. My girlfriend would however send Greg and Tom a check in a heart beat if she knew it could get me banned from these boards.

LMAO! I remember that when you told me afterwards. Classic! Behold the power of MTM Draft Facilitation. Everyone should be as dedicated as you.

Here's one from one of my recent "Fast DC's" that had me laughing out loud:

A guy comes up for his pick and we're waiting on him for an interminable 10 ten minutes or so, and here's the texts verbatim:

ME: Back to you. (no answer)

So 15 minutes later...

Me: You're up now for 45 minutes.

A few more minutes pass...

Text back: He's driving and will pick in about 30 minutes.

Insufferable delay for me, so text back...

Me: Just for that, tell him we're kicking him out of the draft! ;)

Immediate response...

Text back: Fine by me (this is his wife)! :)

I practically spit my food out of my mouth in the restaurant as I read this and my girlfriend asks what's so funny? I tell her. She says let me text her back and tell her "good for you, girl."

More to come as they come to me.

Great story Dan! I showed my wife this blog. After reading, I decided to perform a small test and asked "Honey, if I spent less time reading and talking less baseball, would I get a free pass to watch porn?" She gave me the "look" and simply said "So...who do you like in the fourth round this year?" No free passes for me!
Baseball is a slow, boring, complex, cerebral game that doesn't lend itself to histrionics. You 'take in' a baseball game, something odd to say about a football or basketball game, with the clock running and the bodies flying.

My wife is a born again fantasy baseball believer.

In the beginning, she tolerated my passion for this game and the sport it embraces for years. She watched me scour the daily newspaper for stats while I waited for mailed results from CDM. She wondered why I didn't put the same amount of emphasis on my studies in college that I now put on spreadsheets, prognostications, and acronyms such as BABIP. I usually did well enough to fund the hobby. She endured slow drafts and first version spreadsheets taking over the dining room table in January, then November, and now in October.

Then I had a good year.

and she got a new toy.

Now I have a kitchen pass for life....
People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.
