NCAA Viewing Party In Las Vegas For 2013 NFBC

Post by Greg Ambrosius » Thu Aug 23, 2012 4:31 am

Admittedly, I am knee deep in our NFFC events right now and planning everything for our football live drafts in Las Vegas, New York and Chicago. We are having a record-setting year in football and learning an awful lot about the changing landscape of our industry, and honestly, about our country.

As most of you know, we were the first regional live events contest as we started with live drafts in Las Vegas, New York and Chicago. We eventually expanded to Florida for a few years and my goal was to expand on the regional drafts concept. But in the last couple of years, Americans have chosen to travel less (it's a pain in the ass and expensive) and stay home more often where their 56-inch TVs, speedy Internet and iPads make life so easy. Plus, the technology that we have in the fantasy sports industry now makes people pay $5,000 for a team and not even think twice about drafting that team online.

As a game operator, I'm THRILLED by what online drafts have brought to our business. Heck in 2004 and 2005 we never earned a penny from online drafts. We started to offer online drafts in football of 2006 through MockDraftCentral.com and that area of the business has grown each and every year. It's now become the majority of our business and our draft software is just getting better and better each year. And the fact that we own all of our software now just allows us to continue to grow and grow, while making the software better and better, each year.

But let's remember one thing folks: This is the LIVE EVENTS business. We are a Live Events game operator. And not only that but I LIKE THROWING PARTIES!! I'm a people person. I shake hands with everyone. I have a cold drink with everyone. I like throwing the party and buying the beers if it makes sense. I'll be damned if I'll let this swanky little Internet thing kill our Live Events model!!

So here's what we're going to do: Starting in 2013 we are going to plan a big party and give folks a reason to come BACK to the live events, while still continuing to grow the NFBC online. This upcoming season is going to be a little difficult with Easter on Sunday, March 31st, but that gives us all an excuse to get together on the First Weekend again live in Las Vegas and New York and build up a gathering that we haven't seen for a few years. Who's with me on this?

I don't have the logistics of this down yet or required space or anything like that, but here's what I'm considering for Las Vegas:

First Weekend of the NFBC will be March 22-24, opening weekend of March Madness. That means 16 games on Thursday, March 21st in Las Vegas, 16 games on Friday, 8 on Saturday and 8 on Sunday. It just doesn't get any better than that. I don't know if we can swing it with TVs in one room and satisfying everyone to see the right games, but one way or another I want to throw an NFBC March Madness Viewing Party at our host hotel and kick off the season with hundreds of our best customers in one room drinking and cajoling before they do battle the next 3 days. Hell, we could even host some smaller live drafts ($150 and $250 satellite leagues live if needed) right there during the party and do it up right.

Maybe we do a Thursday Viewing Party during the night games or something like that. I'll figure it out soon enough when we know the MLB schedule and our NFBC schedule, but just keep it in the back of your mind that if you need a reason to come to Las Vegas again for the live drafts that I'm planning on something special that First Weekend. And if we do it right there, we'll make this a tradition going forward and expand it even moreso with an NFFC NFL Viewing Party in Las Vegas that will make this one look small. There will be costs involved to make this first class and a BLAST, but where else could you meet so many great fantasy players in this kind of setting while having sports games to gamble on?

And we'll see what we can do in New York, too. It's obviously tougher there, but maybe on a smaller scale we can find a way to gather at a local sports bar for the games and rent out a big back room just for our NFBC players. We can make that happen in the Big Apple as well.

I look forward to your thoughts as we embark on our 10th SEASON IN THE NFBC!!! Wow, can you say that out loud? 10 YEARS!! We need to celebrate what we've accomplished in March and make sure that we set up a LIVE EVENT that will still live past the days when our computers overtake our lives (if we haven't already gotten to that point). I'm an old grizzled veteran who likes to bring folks together and if this party doesn't do it then nothing ever will!!! Join me for an anniversary celebration and an event that I'm already starting to get my arms around for 2013. I'm going to give you a reason to come early to the Live Events and stay into the early part of the next week and through the early part of that holiday weekend. Stay tuned.

Anyone with me on this? I look forward to your feedback, so begin with the ideas. They will be ADDED to mine because I'm already on a roll! Thanks all and I'll see you for our 10th NFBC season in 2013.

Greg,

I have not yet secured my next "opportunity' yet, but you know you can count me in! I will be there. I must love this especially after how bad I have sucked this year. This has become a true fraternity of people who share common interests and I truly look forward to seeing all of you. I will be there for the first weekend, plan on me being there for the viewing parties, and if you host a $250 or whatever event during the viewing party, count me there too.

I have been in the Main Event without break for nine years and come hell or high water I will be there for the Big TEN. Any idea how many others from that initial 195 have not missed a single year? I know you are snowed with NFFC business right now, but if someone can get me a list of all managers and co-managers from 2004 to 2012, I can figure it out for you (after all, I have some time on my hands right now).

Thanks Wayne and best of luck with the job hunt. We all wish you well there.

I can get you that list. I think this year I looked at it and we were around 60 people who have been with us throughout. I can find the 2004 list and check it with the 2012 list. I'll post that once I come up for air from football. And yes, we will BLOW OUT that 10th anniversary party!!!

Us fellas from Stevieland will be there. We are part of the originals from 2004. I am also hoping I can get a compliment to my Charter Member NFBC Hat. Ten years we have to go a little bigger than a hat though. I think a batting practice jersey with a big #10 on the back of it, with the option of personalize with our team name, I think something like that would be pretty cool. What a ride it has been for the NFBC. The annual March trip to Vegas is a staple and something I look forward to each and every year!

I'm in....still working out the details on which weekend I travel but I'll be running the Bataan Death March marathon in New Mexico the weekend of the 17th and may just extend that trip.
People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.

I haven't updated this thread in a bit because I'm still working with the Bellagio on details, but for those of you who are planning your travels please keep Thursday, March 21st in mind. That's the first day of March Madness and Las Vegas is like Christmas Day on that day!! I am planning to host a Thursday night gathering where we can all get together and converse before killing each other on the draft tables over the weekend!! The setup hopefully will be similar to last year's NCAA Viewing Party, but bigger. I'll try to keep us close enough to the sportsbook so that everyone can run down the hall when needed to update their wagers, but we may need some fit owners to run for some of us!!

Anyway, an NCAA Viewing Party on Thursday, March 21st is still in the works. The Bellagio normally doesn't finalize contracts until at least 90 days out, so I really can't officially announce anything yet. But we're working on it and it should be a great setup to hang out, watch the first round games together, have some great Bellagio food and drink, and kick off the first weekend of our 10th anniversary season IN STYLE!! Plan accordingly. Thanks all.

To hell with college basketball. You want to really do it up right Thursday night? Have a private NFBC party here: http://www.spearmintrhinolv.com Guarantee you have a full attendance.   From what I understand, Lindy can help you with all the details. ;)

I heard from the Bellagio this week and right now it looks like we will host our NCAA Viewing Party in the Monet room that we had last year for the NCAA Viewing Party. That's a fantastic room with a walk-out patio area overlooking the pool and a big projector screen for the games. It's actually the closest ballroom to the sportsbook, although it's still a good run down the hallway. I can't finalize anything until 90 days out of the event, but this is looking like a fun setup. Once I get pricing for everything, we can plan accordingly and get folks signed up. More details coming once I get them from the Bellagio, but come on into Las Vegas a day early and plan to get to meet some of your Message Board friends live and in person at the NCAA Viewing Party. The camaraderie will be outstanding!! :D

Greg:

When you start the list - feel free to include the CHIP and I. I'd tell you to add Jim Christie, but then he is
going to expect me to pay for him......... again. ;)

Sounds great, the NCAA Final Four Viewing party was a blast. Even from somebody that had Kentucky -8.5
and Ohio State straight up with the money line. Thank Goodness for Championship Monday. Kentucky + Under = Major Bailout!

Greg,

Totally sign me up for this if you can pull it off. Sounds like a really great way to kick off the best weekend ever of live draft fantasy baseball! My flight is booked, my wife is fine, (even though I did not cash in 12,I bought her off), I'm hoping that 13 is my lucky year and she'll be glad to see me go again in 14. I made the mistake of drafting only on-line last year....not nearly the rush of drafting live....in Vegas baby! Oh yeah! A terrific March Madness welcome party....at least 10 Leagues of Main Event in one place...I can already feel the buzz and we are over three months away.. god I'm excited.

I LIKE IT!!!

I'm still waiting for final costs from the Bellagio, but my goal is to have this room open around 4 pm PT for the night games, have buffet and drinks available there for everyone, big screen TV and heck if anyone wants to host a small draft we'll do it as well. Anything and everything is open for this evening. We'll have enough space to talk and an outdoor patio area for those who want to walk outside. We'll find runners to get down to the sportsbook for those who need to double down after the first games!! I'm hopeful that we can do all of this for $100 per person, depending on the cost of the big screen, projector, food and drinks. I'll know that once we get within 90 days.

Anyway, I like the early enthusiasm. Here's the first signup list for the NCAA Viewing Party:

Maybe pick up a Forecaster and try to study up a bit. With the Main Event on tap the following morning, you could open up to the Pitching section. If nothing else, it may serve as a reminder that you are required to draft a few arms just to have a legal lineup. ;)

Sack, I already have my Forecaster, and I in fact did notice that there was entire section dedicated to "Major Leagues-Pitchers", is that what you're talking about? And once again may I remind you of your conspicuous absence from the Vegas big money drafts there, Officer Krupke. :P

Thanks for the shout out Ken! I'll both forever love Alfred Morris and hate Miles Austin, but happy with the finish either way! Hopefully see you soon out in Vegas!
