Thanks Harlem. The sad thing for me is I am from Ohio and a life-long Reds fan. At least this year there will be a few Yankees I pull for.

Hi guys - I had pick 2 in NYC league #1. I tried to draft for balance and think I did a decent job covering what I wanted to do. Team one, picking right before me on all odd numbered rounds stole nearly every pick I had planned for my way back, starting in round 2/3. For example, I took Chavez at the end of round 2 thinkig I would take either Vazquez or Mussina with pick 2 of round 3. Of course, team one took Vazquez and Mussina. He drafted 9 starters and no closers. In fact, he drafted 12 starters in the first 23 rounds and filled his needed positions with his reserve picks.

Here is my team, in position order. Any thoughts are appreciated:

C: Lieberthal, Victor Martinez

1/3/CI: Klesko, Chavez, Mueller

2/SS/MI: Soriano, Aurillia, Rivas

OF: Andrew Jones, Jaques Jones, Winn, Mondesi, Finley

Flex: Choice of Catalanatto or Olerude

Pitching, which will be a mix and match based on matchups:

Starters: Santana, Loaiza, Kim, Radke, Rodrigo Lopez, Suppan, Lidle, Darryl May, and possible Scott Shields (if he starts).

Closers: Gagne, Marte, scattered saves from LaTroy Hawkins, Jiminez and Brad Lidge.

On average, I think I have good BA, ERA and Whip. The balancing act will be in finding which starters to use when.

Thanks for your thoughts,

Pete
OK - So I'm not as good as I thought I was; but at least I am consistent.

Thanks for your thoughts,

Pete [/QB]I had the same strategy as you as far as the SP’s are concerned. Take 8-10 of them and rotate based on match-ups and multiple starts all season. Burning top-picks on SP’s was not the way to go in my opinion, remember the year the Rocket went from a 2.65 to a 4.60 ERA? There is no such thing as a LOCK SP in my opinion. Team’s with solid balance in the hitting categories, at least 70 SV’s and SP’s that don’t hurt them would be my favorites to win. Your team comes close to fitting this bill. Good luck.

Hey Pete.

Great meeting you at the auction. Needless to say it was a learning experience for me and at times I made some bad picks. I left myself very exposed on the corners and only 2 closers. Hitting appears suspect.

Looks like I will be doing something like this.

C Lopez, Mauer

1B Doug Mient.

2b Vidro

ss Nomar

3B Castilla

CI Randa

MI Utley (Hairston Jr. when returns)

OF Bonds,Byrd, Podnesik, Grissom (T.Nixon when returns) B. Williams

DH K. Harvey nor now until T. Nixon returns

SP - Beckett, Padilla, O. Perez, R. Ortiz, Lackey or Ohka or Davis for 5th

CL - Percival Borowski need a 3rd CL

I have a lot of early health issues to deal with here. I need some luck!
Thanks for your insightful and thoughtful analysis Gordon, you must be a tout for 3-4 websites. If you actually had been at a draft you would realize how thin the talent was in rounds 20-29. If you’d been sitting in my seat at round 6 with 180-200 HR’s and 15-20 SB’s you would have jumped on Sanchez as well (plus when it’s all said and done he’ll hit about .280 with 50-60 SB’s, not much different from the speed guys that went in round 3.) I’ll let the performances of Ortiz, CC, and Chacon defend themselves.

I have no problem with you knocking my team. It will just serve to discredit any future thoughtless dribble that spews from your computer when my team is on the first page of the overall standings all season.

I just wish you had actually been in this thing so all your friends on the message board could share our critiques with you. (By the way if I am using too many “big” words for you; there is this great website called dictionary.com where you can look them up.)

Peace.
Hilarious! I know he was at the draft, though. This was confirmed by the folks at Krause Publications.

Nathan, I think your team is in the upper quartile. The rest is luck. In the mean time, don't sweat the "constructive criticism."

Oh, BTW, Sanchez went in round 11 of NYC#1.
Thanks. I’m not delusional, I know how many good teams there are and how much luck will play into winning this thing. Although if your assessment is correct I have about a 1 in 50 shot of $100,000; I’ll take those odds any day.

Sanchez was my biggest blown pick of the day, I knew that as I made it, but the vision of a team with less than 100 SB’s horrified me and I didn’t anticipate getting players like Erstad and Roberts so late. I also took Chacon too early, but it was mid-closer run and everyone at that point was a serious risk anyway.

As long as your Yankees 3-4 hitters can bat about .290 and go 90-225-20, I’ll be in the hunt. I’ll also be the one praying for divine intervention each night (like a Juan Pierre injury, a guy I almost took in the 3rd, which would have avoided my infamous Sanchez pick (probably the highest he went in all 13 leagues.))

Well your first wish for (devine intervention) has come true, Juan Pierre, sliding on SB attempt dislocated his Pinky finger (today) and will be paying a visit to a hand specialist in the AM, it doesn't look good...

One more injury update, Alex Sanchez will be held out of all baseball activities due to severe shin splints until Thursday and then be reevaluated...that's two speed demons hurting...

I’ve had shin splints myself; just take a few days off and things will be ok. As long as he’s not the next Eric Davis he should not miss any real time, guess it’s time to step up the prayers a notch

FYI:

Sanchez new man of steal

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Tigers centerfielder Alex Sanchez represents Kirk Gibson's foremost triumph as a major league coach. Gibson's tutoring has made Sanchez a candidate to lead the American League in stolen bases. Sanchez finished second in the AL last season with 44, primarily because of a burst in the final two months after Gibson got through to him.

NNoy,

One more injury update, a third speed demon Carl Crawford is trying mend also...Carl has a moderately (as they describe it) strained groin, they are hopeful he will be ready by opening day but are increasingly beginning to worry if he will be ready for opening day! It looks like the Fantasy Panel experts in NY (who both warned against taking these three due to high risk of injury) are really looking like geniuses...Thanks guys (for the expert advice) I did avoid them on draft day

NNoy,

I had the pleasure of drafting in New York League #1 and had the 7th pick...Great bunch of guys in my league they all made the experience challenging and fun. I agree that injuries play a huge part in the NFBC as well as the what the real major league clubs have to deal with...I too was forced to select players I really didn't want because the talent at the draft board was different than your average local league manager, still I'm happy with the team I drafted, and think I will contend with a little luck in the closer department (it was the only category I couldn't find time to draft for (and each time I did that player was snatched right in front of me by Team 6 and Team 8, still I have a chance in that category if certain closers fail. So here is the 2004 Bud Frogs....

C - Ivan Rodriquez (5)

C - Greg Myers (22)

1B - Jim Thome (2)

2B - Ray Durham (9)

SS - Jose Reyes (6)

3B - Brandon Larson (18)

MI - Alex Cintron (10)

CI - Tino Martinez (23)

OF - Ichiro Suzuki (3)

OF - Rocco Baldelli (7)

OF - J.D. Drew (11)

OF - Kenny Lofton (14)

OF - Melvin Mora (16)

UH - Tike Redman (19)

SP - Mark Prior (1)

SP - Greg Maddux (8)

SP - Livan Hernandez (12)

SP - Freddie Garcia (13)

SP - Miguel Batista (17)

SP - Brian Anderson (24)

RP - Keith Foulke (4)

RP - Mike MacDougal (15)

RP - Billy Koch (21)

B - Omar Vizquel (26)

B - Shigetoshi Hasegawa (25)

B - Tom Gordon (27)

B - Jon Lieber (20)

B - Chad Bradford (28)

B - Chad Fox (29)

Now I will ask for devine intervention and ask that all players will be injury free, no matter who's team there on...Good Luck to all...now the real league starts...everyday managing begins now... :D

Overall, you made the chalk picks through the first 5 rounds (as many people can), but you seemed to falter after that. Sorry, just being honest.
